Over 500 years ago, the fabled Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama created history when he set foot on Indian soil at Calicut. Since then Calicut has played a major role in exporting Indian spices to the rest of the world. The air in the city's 'Spice Market' is redolent with the rich aroma of fresh black pepper, cardamom and assorted spices, and transports visitors back to a very different day and age.
